Marlow, and Heart of Darkness, argue that in the African jungle-"utter solitude without a policeman"-the civilized man is plunged into a world without superficial restrictions, and the mad desire for power comes to dominate him. Throughout the novella, Marlow argues that what Europeans call "civilization" is superficial, a mask created by fear of the law and public shame that hides a dark heart, just as a beautiful white sepulcher hides the decaying dead inside. ![]() The novella depicts European society as hollow at the core: Marlow describes the white men he meets in Africa, from the General Manager to Kurtz, as empty, and refers to the unnamed European city as the " sepulchral city" (a sepulcher is a hollow tomb). Heart of Darkness portrays a European civilization that is hopelessly and blindly corrupt. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() With shades of Stephen King’s 11/22/63, this novel is a suspenseful and heartfelt adventure through time and alternate realities. Even though history is at the center of this plot and WWI is the inciting incident that sparks the fuse, Time and Time Again turned out to be about so much more. Really, I needn’t have worried about a thing. Looking back at those questions now, I have to laugh. While I enjoy time travel books as much as the next reader, I still recall my doubts when I was first pitched this book: What if I don’t know that much about World War I? How much history do I need to know in order to follow the plot? Will I still be able to enjoy this story? Photographs can be altered and lack context, and for this reason they cannot be an entire truth. For this reason, she insists that photographs cannot represent anything of reality. ![]() In her essay, she expresses how photographs can be flawed, or the fault being that they’re falsely interpreted. Sontag relates this to the false representation photographs give of the world. Shadows are not the real image, and so he refers to them as false images. Plato’s allegory is about how in the cave, one sees shadows of objects made on the wall by fire. This first essay is called “In Plato’s Cave”, after ancient Greek philosopher, Plato, and his allegory of the cave. However, in the current climate, it is easier to write an invective than to recount the life of a virtuous man, which he points out as a sign of how times have changed. Tacitus notes that it is a tradition to tell great men’s stories. Clusters of chapters are grouped around topics, as indicated below in the summary and analysis.
